Declutter Your Time Like a Pro: The Cutlery Drawer Analogy

This month's blog started an entire revamp of my kitchen drawers! This was needed, and I feel a renewed energy and clarity from doing this activity. When you first organize your cutlery drawer, everything has a place: forks, knives, and spoons, neatly divided. It's satisfying and functional, making cooking and eating easier. But over time, random utensils sneak in, crumbs settle in the corners, and suddenly, it's not quite the system it used to be. That's when it's time to roll up your sleeves, clean out the drawer, and restore order.

Time management works the same way. At first, a new system feels great. Everything fits into place, and life flows seamlessly. But over time, "dirt" accumulates—unexpected commitments, shifting priorities, and inefficient habits. Tasks that no longer serve you take up precious space, and what once felt organized now feels chaotic.

Now is a great time as we flow into the holiday season to clean out our "time drawer" and end 2024 with more ease, joy, and fun.

Step 1: Evaluate What's in Your Drawer

The first step in time optimization is awareness. Begin by tracking your time and reflecting at the end of the day on where your time was spent. Also, track your energy using my Energy Tracker. Tracking your energy and tasks is like emptying the drawer and seeing what's been taking up space.

Step 2: Decide if Every "utensil" is Needed

Evaluate your tasks and decide if they are productive and needed anymore. For example, there may be a task in your schedule that you have done, but now you can delegate it so that you can focus on a higher priority. If you've completed your Energy Tracker, see where your 100% times are and block it off in your calendar for tasks related to your goal. We can build this together through a Time Optimization Roadmap call.

During your call we'll sort through your tasks and align them with your different energy times—forks and spoons in their proper place. Highly focused tasks go into your peak performance, while low-energy times are reserved for more straightforward tasks or rest.

Step 3: Keep It Functional

After evaluating and deciding, the next step is implementation. Intentional scheduling ensures that the system stays functional. Grab a supportive friend to stay accountable to. Remember, life is dynamic, and your system should be too.

Step 4: Regular Maintenance

Like your cutlery drawer, our time management system needs periodic cleaning. Regularly assess and adjust your schedule. This keeps "crumbs" out of your drawer—things like unnecessary tasks, distractions, or outdated priorities.

Why It Matters

When your time is optimized, life feels lighter. You accomplish more in less time, reduce stress, and create space for the things that truly matter. With a proper time strategy, you will have:

  • Greater productivity without burnout

  • A better work-life balance (I call this time allocation)

  • More clarity on what truly matters

  • Fewer distractions and wasted hours

Time management isn't about squeezing every last second out of your day; it's about using your time with intention and focus. It's about finding what fits and letting go of what doesn't, just like your cutlery drawer.

Are you ready to organize your time, eliminate the crumbs, and make space for what matters? Let's work together to create your Time Optimization Roadmap to a cleaner, more efficient life.
